When people think of bohemian fashion, they often picture warm afternoons, flowing dresses, and colourful layers worn under the summer sun. But one of the things we love most about a thoughtfully curated bohemian wardrobe is that it doesn't have to be seasonal.

With a few simple styling tricks, your favourite kantha pieces, recycled sari cotton styles, luxe pashmina layers, comfy basics, and flowing silks can carry you comfortably through winter without losing the relaxed, expressive style that makes bohemian dressing so special.

At Renew Bohemian, we believe the most sustainable wardrobe is one that's worn often.

Rather than packing your favourite pieces away for half the year, here's how we love to layer them through the cooler months.

1. Start with a Great Base Layer

The easiest way to transition lighter pieces into winter is by starting with a fitted base layer.

A simple long-sleeved tee, ribbed top, or classic turtleneck instantly adds warmth while allowing your favourite dresses, robes, and tunics to remain the hero of your outfit. It's an easy styling trick that works beautifully under flowing silhouettes without adding unnecessary bulk.

Our Bohemian Basics palazzo pants make a great foundation piece, pairing effortlessly with kantha, sari cotton, and pashmina pieces.

2. Don't Pack Away Your Dresses

One of the biggest misconceptions about winter styling is that dresses have to wait until spring.

Adding tights or leggings underneath your favourite maxi or midi dress instantly transforms it into a cosy cold-weather outfit. Finish the look with boots, a chunky scarf, and a warm outer layer, and you're ready for everything from weekend markets to dinner with friends.

Whether it's a Luna Dress, Zephyr Dress, Solara Dress or one of our sweet Juniper minis, layering lets you keep wearing the pieces you already love.

3. Mix Textures for Effortless Boho Style

Bohemian style has always celebrated texture, and winter is the perfect time to embrace it.

Layering different fabrics not only adds warmth but also creates depth and interest, giving outfits that beautifully collected, lived-in feel that's at the heart of bohemian dressing. Don't be afraid to mix reclaimed kantha with sari cotton, Bohemian Basics, flowing silks, or cosy pashmina pieces.

The beauty of bohemian style isn't about everything matching perfectly; it's about creating combinations that feel effortless, personal, and uniquely your own.

4. Let Your Layers Do the Heavy Lifting

The right layering piece can completely transform an outfit.

On milder days, a Mahuya Vest, Gemini Vest, or kantha Flow Robe adds warmth without feeling heavy. As the temperature drops, reach for a Willow Coat, Haven Coat, Nomad Coat, or Kindred Spirit Coat to wrap yourself up without sacrificing personality.

The best part? These pieces work just as well thrown over a simple pair of jeans as they do layered over flowing dresses or wide-leg pants.

5. Swap Your Accessories with the Seasons

Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest impact.

Trading sandals for leather boots, adding a knitted scarf, a cosy hat, or layered jewellery instantly gives your favourite outfit a winter feel. Accessories are an easy way to add warmth while keeping your wardrobe feeling fresh throughout the seasons.

Our Wanderer Bags pair beautifully with oversized coats, textured knits, and flowing dresses, adding another handcrafted element to your layered look.

6. Build a Wardrobe That Works All Year Round

One of the joys of slow fashion is discovering just how many ways a single piece can be worn.

Rather than buying a completely new wardrobe every season, thoughtful layering allows you to keep reaching for the pieces you already know and love (we're proud outfit repeaters over here). A lightweight robe becomes a layering piece. A summer dress becomes a winter staple. Wide-leg pants pair just as beautifully with a chunky knit as they do with a silk cami.

It's one of the reasons we design our collections with versatility in mind. Relaxed silhouettes, natural fibres, and timeless styling make it easy to create outfits that move effortlessly between seasons.

At its heart, winter layering isn't about hiding your favourite clothes. It's about giving them new life.

Great article filled with spot-on suggestions and featuring some of our beautiful community peeps! 🩵

I LOVED layering my kantha pieces over the last couple of cold seasons. The bright colors and bold patterns brought me so much joy during those dreary winter months – and kept me perfectly warm and cozy at the same time!

IMO, merino wool is the best choice for base layers. If you are concerned about it being itchy, it’s NOT – just make sure it’s good quality fabric.
